Know Your History: Rick Baker Makes a Kinder, Gentler Bigfoot.

Rick Baker's Harry.

 

Set the way back meter for 1987 and come along on a video journey to watch Rick Baker as he introduces Harry.  Harry and the Hendersons Directed by William Dear and starring John Lithgow featured a beast never before seen by cinema audiences.  The film centers around a kind-hearted bigfoot creature played by creature performer Kevin Peter hall.

Coming off his success with An American Werewolf in London, Rick was approached by the director with the feeling that he was the ONLY man for the job of bringing the character of Harry to life.  Early in the process, Rick discovered that with the range of motion that would be required, operation of the puppeteered head had to be done using radio control.

Harry was the first head he had ever radio controlled.  The three video links below are three parts of a behind the scenes documentary called “Harry and the Hendersons: Finding the Missing Link”  I hope you enjoy this look back at one of the most successful uses of radio control of it’s time.
